Mayumi Heene, the mother of balloon boy Falcon, admitted to the police that the runaway balloon drama that caught the attention of the whole world was just all a publicity stunt. This was in contradiction to her husband’s statement right before he went to jail.
The Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper was able to obtain the video interviews that authorities did with Mayumi. In the interview, the Heene mother told the sheriff’s officials that the event on October 15, 2009 was a hoax wherein she and her husband Richard Heene called 911 to report that their 6-year-old son had been flown away inside a spaceship-like balloon.
Suspicions arose during a CNN interview when Falcon was asked about his ordeal. He was heard saying something like “You said we were doing this for the show” and then he went on crying. On another interview, he vomited when he was asked the same question.
Apparently, the couple was scouting for a reality show during that time. Prior to that, they have already appeared twice in Wife Swap. Producers of the show were developing another reality show with the couple just before the incident but dropped it right after allegations of a hoax. Richard and Mayumi met during an acting class in Hollywood.
Richard Heene has pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public servant where he was sentenced 30 days in jail that started in January 11. His wife, on the other hand, will serve 20 days in jail after pleading guilty to filing a false.
Richard had told reporters before he went to jail that he really believed Falcon was inside the balloon, but only pleaded guilty to save his wife from being deported to Japan.
