The NAACP Image Awards gave most of its film trophies this year to “Precious”.
The tale about a teenager who got pregnant twice by her own father won the Outstanding Motion Picture and the Outstanding Independent trophies on the ceremony on Friday.
The film’s main star Gabourey Sidibe who played the lead role and Mo’Nique who played as her abusive mother were also honored as Outstanding Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress for a Motion Picture, respectively.
Director of “Precious” Lee Daniels delivered the speech surrounded by the cast and producers of the movie. He was twice interrupted by the orchestra but was finally cut off when Mary Mary performed on stage before the show closed.
The awards show was presented by the National Association of Colored People.
Sidibe cried while accepting award after beating Oscar favorite Sandra Bullock. “Precious” was her debut film.
In the music category, Keri Hilson won Outstanding New Artist, Maxwell won Outstanding Male Artist and Mary J. Blige won as Outstanding Female Artist.
Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” won as Outstanding Documentary while Daryl Mitchell of “Brothers” won as Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.
Tyler Perry’s achievements and philanthropy won him the Chairman’s Award. Wyclef Jean was honored with the Vanguard Award for his relief efforts in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Human rights activist Van Jones was given the President’s Award.
The ceremony was held in the Shrine Auditorium and was hosted by Anika Noni Rose and Hill Harper and broadcast live on Fox.
