Joost, a struggling online start-up company from the creators of Skype and Kazaa, was purchased by online advertising company Adconion.
The Adconion Media Group announced the acquisition of all of the assets of Joost for an undisclosed amount. The company will now have access to all of Joost’s video platform and the Joost trademark.
About 12 Joost employees were provided employment with Adconion. They plan to maintain Joost.com as an entertainment website.
Joost had been seeking a buyer for about 3 months. They had approached Comcast, a cable provider, and Time-Warner Cable about a possible sale. Both declined.
Joost was created by Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, who brought the Internet phone service Skype, and the p2p file-sharing service Kazaa to the world.
Joost chose to get into online video after a failed attempt at becoming a p2p sharing site. But advertising dollars did not follow the change. So Joost wavered and tried to make money but just didn’t find a niche.
Adconion CEO Tyler Mosbius, said the purchase will help them expand their video advertising services.
