Google vs novelist

A Chinese author has sued Google for scanning her books without proper permission into the Internet company’s library. Mian Mian of Shanghai has asked 61,000 yuan or US $8,950 for damages from the online powerhouse. This is after Google scanned her newest book, Acid House.

Mian Mian is known for her vivid tales of sex, drug, and violence, which is a taboo in China. This caused her to be banned from Beijing but her works are widely available through piracy.

Google has said, through its Beijing spokeswoman Marsha Wang, that it removed all Mian Mian’s works from its library riight after the lawsuit was filed. No further comments were provided regarding the case.

The author’s camp is not contented with the answer they have gotten. However, a Chinese judge has ruled that both parties should engage in a settlement talk and report back.

Google has encountered a similar problem last year with American authors and publishers which resulted to $125 M settlement. In Europe, Google only scans materials which are more than 150 years old for fear of violating EU’s copyright infringement law.
