You could win a free trip and see some snow

Denizens of warm-weather climates like Thailand and Singapore are competing for a three month all-expense paid vacation in Colorado this winter season, provided by that state’s office of tourism.

The only prerequisite is that you have never experienced snow before in your lifetime, and can explain why you’d like to have that experience. There will be three winners in the contest, and will spend anywhere between two weeks and three months during this winter writing in blogs about their experiences skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding.

Ten semi-finalists will be announced, and from those the winners will be chosen. The voting will be done in two parts. Half of the votes will come from online voting, and the other half will be by a panel of judges who will “audition” in Colorado, this January. The voting will end on December 11th. Recent contests similar to Colorado’s have sprung up from Orlando, Florida and Queensland, Australia. It has become somewhat of a fad among tourism marketers.

Also, the “World’s Unluckiest Traveler” contest is taking place and offering a $10,000 prize. Travel Guard is collecting stories of travel horror on their website at: travelguard.com where anyone can post a photo or video telling their tales. Prizes will be awarded monthly leading up to the Grand Prize of $10,000 to be awarded in December, 2010.
