U.S. Airports are asking that travelers pay a fee increase that will be added to each trip in the upcoming year.
They cite increasing costs for construction, and they have been lobbying the Congress to alllow them to raise the “passenger facility charge” that is paid as a part of each person’s ticket price.
The charge is currently $4.50 for each leg of every trip, with a cap of $18. This money supports runway construction projects , as well as terminal and gate maintenance and construction.
A House bill that is now pending would reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would raise the fee to $7 for each leg of the flights. The Senate already voted to keep the current rate.
The airlines, who must collect the fees, oppose the fee hike. They already deal with many complaints about the charge even though they have no control over it, they only collect it as a part of the ticket price.
The money generated by the facility charge is supposed to be only for construction that improves safety, security, increase the passenger capacity limit, reduce excessive noise or increase competition between carriers.
